Building Tomorrow + ODW

Organization Profile:

Building Tomorrow seeks to build schools in Uganda where there would otherwise be little or no access to primary education. Then they issue a challenge grant to the entire community, covering the cost of construction materials and skilled laborers in return for their promise to donate the land & volunteer 20,000 hours of self-labor to construct the school. The leaders in the community and the family members of future students form a committee to oversee the construction and management of the school, and then the teachers salaries and operating costs are covered by the Ugandan Ministry of Education. BT takes care to monitor the success of the school, but as you can see, they also understand the importance of letting the community take ownership.

ODW Partnership:

Building Tomorrow Academy Grant (not yet fully funded)

Matching Grant: $60,000

The $60,000 project with BT will go towards the total construction of a primary school in Uganda. Each BT Academy provides learning space for 325 children with seven classrooms, an office, a library, toilets and a playing field. BT Academies are often the first permanently built place of learning many students attend. When BT performs their initial assessments they focus on the number of students within a 2km radius unable to attend a formal school, the availability of local building resources, and overall accessibility among other variables.
