Beta Version: Bugs & Glitches
The soft beta version of the website is finally here but please do not forward the site or share on any social networking site or blogs for another few week. We need to go through several more revisions before we invite another round of folks.
Let us emphasize that there's alot of work that still needs to be done on the website before we officially launch ODW to the world on October 20. So, in advance, thanks for your patience, grace, and cooperation.
But this is where you come in. This morning, we emailed about 200 people that have donated funds and/or signed up for our newsletter. For the time being, we have only invited these 200 people to take the website for a drive - even if it's far from being completed. But we invited you not only to catch a deeper glimpse of our vision but to also ask for your help. We need you to do two very important things:
- Create a user profile for yourself. Top right corner -> register. And fill out the appropriate info, upload a profile pic, and even share some pictures. We're aspiring to have a mini social networking aspect in order to create a community of people that will work together to fight extreme global poverty.
- Take some time to navigate through the website and let us know if you see
- bugs
- glitches
- dead links
- errors
- browser incompatibility (we just found out the site looks horrible in IE7)
And please share your comments here in this blog entry. It is much appreciated.

Comments
I'm having a hard time uploading my pictures.
thanks for all the hard work guys. since the menu items in the drop down lists is in white, it can be hard to read against some of the picture backgrounds. also, for some of those menus, the drop down disappears before my mouse can move all the way down to the bottom (i'm using IE8).
I'll probably have a bunch of feedback over the next few days, but here's a bit to start. I'm using Safari 4.0.1 on a Mac.
* The message box that displays a confirm or error message should probably be more visible than it is. When I attempted to log in and provided the wrong password, it took me a minute to figure out what happened: the message appeared in the middle of the page, and in a small font; otherwise, it looked like nothing happened. It might be better to display the message in an overlay (e.g. the way facebook does it). Alternatively, you could display it up near the "Register/Login" link in the upper right that a user clicks to log in: that's the first place I looked when I tried to figure out what happened.
* I like that you guys are doing facebook connect. I recommend testing thoroughly. We just did a facebook connect integration my company's site, and ran into a lot of issues/gotchas. I'd be happy to lend any tips that we learned-- contact me offline (dazuma at gmail.)
* When I first tried to set up an account, using facebook connect, it seemed to fail in an odd way. Here's what I did:
1) I was already logged into facebook.
2) Pull down the upper right login/register drop-down
3) Choose the facebook connect button.
4) Authorize the ODW application in the facebook overlay that appears.
5) Click create new account with facebook connect.
It fails with the error "Your e-mail address and confirmed e-mail address must match. Facebook connect registration failed for the reasons listed." and drops you back into the regular account creation workflow, without facebook connect active.
So I created a new account the normal way, and then did a "link" with facebook connect, and that worked.
If you have a facebook-connected account, and you log in with facebook connect and then log out, it just logs you out of ODW, but not out of facebook connect (e.g. it doesn't seem to call FB.Connect.logout). That is, the facebook connect cookies are retained: facebook connect thinks you're still logged in. So for example if you then go and re-click the facebook connect login button, it just logs you back in without asking who you are. At least until you invalidate the facebook session by logging out of facebook. This may or may not be your desired behavior, but I imagine it could be a security hole in certain cases.
eugene and minhee,
it's beautiful. i'm on moz firefox right now and everything is aligned and such.
i'm not sure if this was intentional, but clicking on the large size "one day's wages" mark in the top left corner or clicking the "home" button on the main page leads me back to the original ODW site [the one that was being used pre-beta launch for newsletter sign up, etc.] thus, after i created a profile, i couldn't seem to find my way back to the beta site. or maybe i just missed a link.
on FB connect, the links to creating a new ODW profile or hooking up FB to an existing ODW profile seem markedly less designed and less graceful than the links found on the rest of the page.
sorry, as a designer i'll probably point out a lot of nit picky things that might not be as big a deal. under "community," on the large right hand side bank of links, "BLOG" is bolded and/or larger than the rest of the links. also unsure if this was intentional.
i hate being a critic sometimes...but it looks wonderful! i'm excited to see what is in store for ODW. i'll keep looking for bugs and such.
cheers,
-ant
One more bug... one someone's profile view, clicking the links under "Work" tends to lead to "page not found" (404?). Links from other fields work as expected. Is it possible that tags created from the "work" field aren't getting populated correctly?
The subscribe button is off suddenly. But it's looking great.
hey guys... just noticed that the login is no longer secure. i logged in as myself and was instead given access to someone else's login page. i clicked on another page, then got access to yet another member's login info.
thanks jack. i wrote up a 'ticket' and we'll have it looked at and resolved - hopefully soon.
thanks everyone for your help & patience.
bug for ya: trouble uploading new picture onto profile...as in, on the change picture page, "browse" is present to open the file for a picture from my pc but no "upload" button anywhere to upload the chosen file :)
site's looking great though! :)
Glad to see the Facebook Connect button, though it's clearly not working optimally.
On my second attempt to register the connection with my Facebook profile, I get the message "Your Fabook connect link is now activate" (so, misspelling "Facebook" and missing a final 'd' and period), but also a lot of fields for info that should in theory could be auto-populated from Facebook so as to avoid having users re-enter content (and re-upload avatars).
My registration was completed without any glitches. The only thing I noticed is it reversed the order of my "searches" and "organizations I support."
i don't think the wage calculator is working quite right. i tried my hourly rate and it came up with 14,600...i WISH. the annual rate seems a little low too, but that might just be the way it is calculated vs. my calculations.
i'm using safari on my macbook and it looks great, by the way.
it took me a minute to figure out where to join (w/o reading this page). it might be nice to have "Join" on the Community drop down menu or on any of the community pages.
regarding donations: since "administrative costs" are mentioned under checks, it might be worth mentioning it again under the online payment methods. it doesn't look like there's an option to designate the funds to "administrative costs" or "one days wages" so perhaps there should be a note saying that all online donations will go to the giving fund (vs. admin).
@michelle,
thanks so much for your donation and for your input. those comments are helpful. i'll contact you separately to see where you want to invest your donation.
Site looks great!
1. when registering i got a funky error box "An http error 503 occurred. http://www.onedayswages.org/taxonomy/autocomplete/4" it comes up in pairs every time i put something in the "personal links section" ultimately i just pressed through it and it didn't seem to affect anything.
2. my picture upload is cropped. i must have missed the directions for dimenstions? it would be great to either have a way to align it or just make it auto adjust?
that's it so far.. it really is a great looking site!
