Improving Children's Health in India | Sahaya

One Day's Wages is thrilled to launch a new partner project with Sayaha International to help with their efforts to bring about positive change in India. ODW will match the $4,600 raised by this campaign for a total grant of $9,200. By supporting this project, Sahaya will be able to bring improved health care and health education to children living in the rural area of Andimadam in south India.

This partnership will help bring improved health care and health awareness to more than 600 children who are a part of 2 kindergarten/elementary schools, an orphan sponsorship program and a vocational training program. Sahaya will hire a nursing staff to perform health check-ups on all students and collaborate with science teachers to design and teach a health awareness curriculum. This project will have a significant impact on the children of Andimadam and bring about improved health in this community for generations to come.

Who is Sahaya?

Sahaya is a non-profit organization committed to making a difference towards improving the quality of life in developing countries. Through their volunteer efforts, Sahaya provides assistance to grassroots NGO's and CBO's that implement social development projects for the underprivileged.

The Need

It is estimated that more than half of the children in India under the age of 5 are not getting the proper health care they need. UNICEF estimates that 66 of every 1,000 children die before the age of 5, putting India's under-5 mortality rate as one of the highest in the world.

In the villages of Andimadam, awareness of health-related issues and access to preventive measures is very low. Misconceptions about sexual health and puberty are especially rampant. At home or at school, parents, guardians and teachers are often not comfortable or not willing to explain these issues to children and the school science curriculum is not designed to address these issues.

What is the ODW + Sahaya Partnership?

One Day's Wages and Sahaya are partnering together to bring improved health to children through education and health check-ups in the Andimadam area of India. We are asking supporters of Sahaya and this cause to raise $4,600 for this project and ODW will match these funds for a total grant of $9,200.

This project has two main objectives:

1. Initiation of a health monitoring program for all children in Sahaya sponsored schools and programs.

Sahaya will hire a Clinical Nurse and Community Health Nurse who will perform general health checks for all the children in Sahaya sponsored schools. The check-ups will include things like temperature checks, vision tests, height-weight measurements, simple medications, and give referrals to local doctors or hospitals if necessary.

2. Education of health science and preventative health measures.

Nurses and science teachers will develop and teach a health curriculum. The curriculum will be designed to educate the children on general health, preventative health measures, infectious diseases, and sexual and reproductive awareness.

How You Can Help.

This is such great news to read in the midst of all the terrible things we read about on a daily basis. I hope that this organization can continue to do good things for these kids in India.
