kiva.org and heifer.org
Try contacting the folks at Kiva: www.kiva.org. They have an amazing microcredit program with individual entrepreneurs in the developing world.
Also, Heifer International is really sweet (www.heifer.org). Rather than giving cash, they give people in developing countries animals, which produce milk, eggs, income, and more animals. It's a longer-lasting donation than simple money and has the potential to give someone a real long-term livelihood.

I like Heifer International
I like Heifer International policy a lot. I think it is useless to just give money to poor African countries, but it is very important to teach them to earn money themselves. To improve their economies. If to speak about the developing countries I think it is very important to show how people can use all the opportunities they have. I've noticed that a lot of people want to start a business, have a lot of nice business ideas but are afraid to implement them. I've recently found a nice torrent source where there are a lot of books which will be helpful to young entrepreneurs http://bytesland.com/entrepreneur . Here there are motivational and practical books which can be of great help. But of course, the main thing is not to read but to act.
Kiva
I'd like to clarify that Kiva does not itself perform any lending activities. Kiva is simply a bridge between Microfinance Institutions working on the ground, and potential donors in the states.
