The American Foundation for Children with AIDS | Zimbabwe
One Day's Wages is excited to partner with The American Foundation for Children with AIDS (AFCA). Through this matching grant AFCA seeks to empower communities in Zimbabwe who have been hit hard by the AIDS pandemic to take control of a brighter and healthier future. ODW will match the $12,035 raised for a total of $24,070.
Through this grant, 77 orphan families (about 385 children) in Zimbabwe will receive goats to help them meet their own physical, financial and educational needs.
Who is AFCA?
AFCA works to improve the lives of children and youth struggling with the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. They provide cost effective relief, services, medical and social support, education and advocacy to help the children achieve their full life potential.
The Need.
Zimbabwe has an estimated 1.8 million orphans due to the HIV/AIDS crisis. Widespread HIV/AIDS has perpetuated poverty and economic collapse within affected families, often leaving children with only one, or no surviving parents. This crisis has also severely weakened the extended family which has traditionally played a vital role of being the natural caregiver of the orphaned child. Because of this, the majority of orphans in Zimbabwe live below the poverty line and are in need for external help.
What is the ODW + AFCA Partnership?
This $24,070 grant will provide 77 orphan families (approximately 385 children) with goats, training, support, and oversight to build their capacity to meet their own physical needs which include:
- Better nutritional levels
- The ability to pay for school fees
- The ability to care for their health and medical needs
- Healthier vegetable plots from manure
