Esther's Running For a Cause
UPDATE: Congratulations to Esther! She completed her first marathon - the Santa Barbara Marathon - on Saturday, November 6. ODW is so proud of Esther and humbled by our partnership to fight global poverty. Here's a great picture of her running strong through the finish line!

For some time now my heart has broken for the many people in poverty in my own city and around the world. I have often wondered how I can take a more active role in eradicating this awful mess. However, I have often felt hopeless as I read stories and heard the news of this growing problem.
This past January I turned thirty and one of my lifetime goals was to run a marathon by that time. But instead of meeting that goal I completed another, I was officially done having kids. I gave birth to our surprise baby girl "Summer" in October of 2009. So I'm heading towards thirty-one, and I am as determined as ever to complete a marathon.
Recently when I was out doing one of my weekday runs, I was thinking about what I could do to help others. Then it hit me... I'm running for myself. This goal of running a marathon is all about me. So the wheels started spinning and I realized that I could turn my goal into a community effort about others instead.
I am currently a stay at home mom to three kids under the age of five. In all the craziness that comes with raising children I have struggled with feeling as if my own hands are tied. But I am realizing that I am free to run, free to use my body for a cause to help others.
So I am asking you to join with me in running this race. I am joining with ODW to support their partnership with NURU International and its agriculture program. This money will provide loans for farming families in Kenya, and can make all the difference as they rise from extreme poverty. Together we can join the movement to fight poverty and help struggling families in Africa.
Esther will be running the Santa Barbara Marathon on Nov. 6, 2010.
