Nuru International

WHO IS NURU?

Nuru International began operations in 2008 in Kuria, Kenya. Nuru (a Kiswahili word meaning light) intentionally engaged Kuria for six months doing fact finding research to establish the areas most pressing needs. Through this they developed holistic programs active in the following areas: water/sanitation, agriculture, education, healthcare, and community economic development. They have worked to partner with several NGOs on the ground to drill wells and implement agricultural programs.

Nuru's hope is that each project’s local staff will help scale the project and replicate it in other communities around the primary project site to be an agent of transformation in the country after Nuru’s direct financial involvement has ceased. Nuru hopes to have each community it works in self-sustaining in 5 years time.

WHAT IS THE ODW + NURU PARTNERSHIP?

An ODW Partnership of $15,000 would provide loan capital for Nuru’s agriculture program. This would allow for expansion of the program’s beneficiaries in a new area of Kuria, impacting approximately 70 families of average 5 members, impacting a total  of 350 individuals.

Each loan, which consists of seeds, fertilizer, and other farming materials, is $107 USD per year per season, for a total of $214 USD annually per family.

After one year in the program, families average $369.40 of income (after their loan is repaid with interest, and after their own family’s food needs are met). This money can go towards paying school fees for children, medical needs, and/or savings for future investment. For a farmer in rural Kenya, this income makes all the difference in their quality of life and contributing to their rise from extreme poverty.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

  • Start a birthday or work for a cause campaign and raise funds directly for this partnership!
  • Form a group campaign (family, school, church, etc.) or share other ideas with us.
  • Help spread the word. Email, Tweet, Share on FB, Like, etc.
