Pakistan Flood Relief Fund

Update: On September 30, 2010, we reached our initial goal of raising $20,000 for the PRF [Pakistan Relief Fund] and the funds were sent to our two partners.

This was before...

On July 21st, Pakistan began experiencing extreme flooding due to heavy rains and monsoons, causing rivers to breach capacity and entire villages to become submerged. Now, it's estimated that nearly 1/5 of the entire country is underwater.

This natural disaster is affecting nearly 20 million people - more than the Haiti Earthquake AND 2004 Asia Tsunami combined, many aid organizations are estimating. This is due largely to the loss of infrastructure: homes, businesses, crops, health and education services, that will take years to rebuild.

Unfortunately, there has been relatively little response to this crisis by the international community, when compared to other large natural disasters. The lack of response to the crisis is affecting flood victims, as many aid organizations are struggling with lack of funds to respond to the disaster.

For this reason, ODW has chosen to partner with two organizations - KASHF and World Vision. Both these organizations already have a very substantive presence in Pakistan and are currently engaged in the relief efforts. We've created an initial goal of raising and distributing $20,000 to support the flood relief efforts. All donations through ODW's Pakistan Flood Relief Fund will be evenly distributed between these two organizations.

KASHF's primary mission is "to alleviate poverty by providing quality and cost effective microfinance services to low income households, especially women, in order to enhance their economic role and decision-making capacity." ODW donations to KASHF will specifically go to provide relief supply packages which includes items such as rice, oil, tea, soap, tea, basic medicine, etc.

One relief supply packages costs US $65 and is able to sustain a family of five for 4 weeks!

World Vision is a very respected humanitarian organization that serves nearly 100 million people in 100 different countries including Pakistan. World Vision has mobilized an emergency response in Pakistan, and plans to remain on the ground to help children and families rebuild their communities and restore their hope in the months and years to come. ODW donations to WV will supply emergency food, clean water, shelter, medical care, and more.

ODW is personally committing $5,000 towards the Pakistan Relief Fund in hopes and belief that through our movement and network, we can reach and surpass the initial goal of $20,000. As always, 100% of your donations (minus credit card transactions costs) will go directly to the relief efforts.
