Hi! My name is Devin Gillespie and I am a volunteer Administrative Assitant and Fundraiser for the Uganda Rural Fund (URF). The URF is a registered 501(c)(3) charity founded in 2005 under the Tax ID: 20-4118165 in the United States. URF is also registered in Uganda with a CBO number C.D.5821. We are an international and grassroots Community Based Organization that exists on non-political, non-denominational, and non-sectarian principles. Uganda Rural Fund aims to empower orphans, impoverished youth, and women to fight poverty in Uganda’s rural communities, through the creation of educational and sustainable development opportunities.
We carry out our mission by means of the Hope Academy, a school and community center in the rural Maseka region of southern Uganda. Hope Academy was founded in 2008 to provide secondary and vocational education to orphans and disadvantaged youth who have dropped out of school in order to give them a second chance to receive an education. Since then it has developed into a community center that provides not only edcation to the local population but also a community garden, village bank and micro loan system, computer lab, community library and orphanage. Not to mention the water filtration and pump systems we have installed that serve as the best source of clean and disease free water for the population of surrounding villagers. In additgion to our services at the Hope Academy, our staff and volunteers tirelessly serve the community by visiting the homes of child-headed families and assiting them with subsistance farming and drip irrigation. We also disperse malaria nets to the local communities, give HIV and health awareness visits and seminars and provide hospital transportation to local villagers when possible.
I joined One Days Wages to meet and connect with other individuals who are as passionate and committed to the underprivileged people of the world as I am to the hopeful, fascinating and spirited people of rural Uganda. I hope to gain insight from the connections I make through this platform and to raise funds for my organizations and the countless other organizations working tirelessly to raise the living standards of people in the developing world.
I find that the best way to raise funds and gain support is to first educate people on the cause you are working towards and then create well organized and distinctively aimed projects. People enjoy contributing to a fund in which they can gain a concrete idea of what their money is capable of achieving. One Days Wages provides the perfect platform to create unique and personalized fundraisers and to gain insight from other volunteers and contributors in the field.
