Nuru International + ODW
![]() | |
Organization Profile: | Nuru International believes that extreme poverty is a contributing factor to the causes of 21st century terrorism and insurgency, and that a reduction in extreme poverty will impede the proliferation of terrorism and insurgency. Nuru International’s Founder and CEO Jake Harriman's personal experiences fighting the war on terror around the world convinced him of the link between extreme poverty and terrorism. Jake left his career in the Marine Corps and enrolled at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business to build an organization that would address the growing threat of terrorism by ending extreme poverty. With the support of his classmates, professors, and Silicon Valley investors, Jake founded Nuru International. |
ODW Partnership: | Kenya Partner Project Partner Project: $15,000
This partnership will provide loan capital for Nuru’s agriculture program. This will allow for expansion of the program’s beneficiaries in a new area of Kuria, Kenya. Each loan, which consists of seeds, fertilizer, and other farming materials, is $107 USD per year per season, for a total of $214 USD annually per family. This project will allow 70 Kenyan families - with an average of 5 members each - to enter into this empowering agricultural program. After one year in the program, families average $369.40 of income (after their loan is repaid with interest, and after their own family’s food needs are met). This money can go towards paying school fees for children, medical needs, and/or savings for future investment. For a farmer in rural Kenya, this income makes all the difference in their quality of life and contributing to their rise from extreme poverty. |
