Meet Rene

The Batwa indigenous people are not only the poorest but also the most marginalized people in Burundi. The Batwa people face discrimination from other Burundians, and vast majority of Batwa do not have National Identity Cards and are therefore not viewed as legal Burundian citizens, increasing their vulnerability. Without an ID, one cannot vote, pursue justice if a crime has been committed against them, own property, find employment, legally marry, use public transportation, easily access healthcare and basic education, and other fundamental services.

At age 67, Rene has received his first official ID, along with hundreds of others in his village. He can now vote, seek legal employment, and have access to healthcare. The ID kit project culminated in a celebration of dignity for the Batwa people.

Join us in celebrating stories of dignity and hope this holiday season!
