My name is Alex and I am 21 years old. I am currently completing my undergraduate degree in Sociology with a focus on poverty, and philosophy of ethics and values in society. I am currently at a California Community College but hope to transfer to the University of Washington, U.C. Berkeley, or Boston University. While in school, I hope to gain experience with leading people to lead lives that include community service and local and global awareness of poverty. I served as the Vice Present of Service for our Beta Mu Zeta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society, last semester, and will continue that position this coming year I don't mean to boast, but throughout my college years I have made sure to dedicate my time to the community I live, volunteering at the local homeless shelter, homeless resource organization, food bank, and foster child assistance organization. Not only is my time making a difference in the lives of others but I have had the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals that have passed on valuable advice but I have also learned a lot about myself such as my strengths and weaknesses and what exactly I want to do in life. After I get my Bachelor degree, I am going to take at least a year off of school to volunteer abroad with the PeaceCorps in a developing country where the people are living in a state of extreme poverty. After I spend a year doing that, I want to volunteer a year in the United States working to combat poverty with AmeriCorps. After that, I hope to complete my studies with a graduate degree in either public policy and non-profit management or and M.B.A with a focus on social entrepreneurism. Three words to describe me are: Compassionate, Optimistic, and Motivated.
Why Do You Support ODW:
I support ODW first and foremost because of the passion and dedication of the founders. I have extreme admiration for the Cho's and their commitment to fighting global poverty and to bringing together many people who share the same cause. They added their own vision to the team of organizations around the world that work to end poverty and better the lives of so many. I support ODW because the Chos are extremely sincere. They did not give up so much to start an organization with their gain in mind, instead they felt it was the right thing to do. I support ODW becasue I like the vision and values of the organization and the idea of giving one day's wage is brilliant.
