Project #185 | Immediate Food Assistance in Kyrgyzstan
Our partnership with Crosslink Development International
One Day’s Wages partnered with Crosslink Development International (CDI) to respond to the immediate needs of the Kyrgyz people as the COVID-19 government shutdown disrupted their daily livelihood and well-being. Since many Kyrgyzstanis work as day laborers and don’t have a buffer for expenses, the shutdown of the economy had dire consequences. Transportation was severely restricted so any citizens with mobility issues had physical difficulty procuring necessities. The elderly and marginalized in remote areas were disproportionately affected by these guidelines as they could not go to the local markets and other vendors that would normally be their cheapest option for food and other staples.
Our partnership distributed emergency food packs vulnerable community members during COVID-19. Food packets reached over 4,000 families, providing 23,505 people with 10 weeks of essential food aid.

Meryem’s Story
Living in a multigenerational household, Meryem,* her two children, and her many grandchildren support one another. Her pension was supplemental income, filling in gaps for the household as much as possible. But when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, her children lost their jobs due to the restrictions, and the family was suddenly without its primary income sources. They had no idea how they were going to survive on Meryem’s pension alone. It couldn’t even provide enough food for all of them. The neighborhood leaders connected Meryem to CDI volunteers who began bringing emergency food packs. Meryem was ecstatic, expressing her gratitude with kisses. While CDI primarily focuses on sustainable development projects, through partnership with One Day’s Wage and other donors, families like Meryem’s were able to access essential support during a global crises.
