Our partnership with Friendly Water for the World

It’s estimated that 1 in 3 wells are broken throughout Africa. This most often happens because the organizations that build the wells never train locals in care and maintenance of the wells. This project built a new center that will be a resource for improving water quality and access not only in Mityana District, but throughout the region. Using the resource center as a training facility, teams of locals will learn how to repair broken pumps and therefore have the tools to provide clean water for many years to come. 

In addition, this project offered training in BioSand Filter fabrication, distribution, and maintenance. This training increased access to clean water, and provided resources for the surrounding communities to learn about clean water and receive WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) trainings to decrease prevalence of waterborne disease. Through this partnership, 14 rainwater catchment systems were built, 206 BioSand Water Filters were constructed and distributed, the Training Center was constructed, a well was completed, 10 WASH training seminars were held, a group of 16 young people were trained and are now setting up a business to construct and sell BioSand Water Filters, and our best estimate is that well over 2,094 people have benefited directly plus many more indirectly. Overall health has improved and waterborne diseases are down by 11%.
